Overview: Apprenticeship Training as Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO)

Apprenticeship training is the time-proven method of producing highly skilled trade workers. It is the process in which a person learns a specific trade, or occupation, through related school courses and job experience.

Becoming an Optician Apprentice is a 6,000 hour commitment taking from three to six years to complete. During this time, supervised training under a licensed optician, optometrist, or physician would be expected.

The curriculum covers:

  • Decision making based on established guidelines and protocol
  • Skilled use of machines as well as large and small instruments
  • Communication and care of eye patients
    • Options for the patient
    • Benefits to the patient
  • Lens preparation
    • Cutting and grinding
    • Polishing and mounting
    • Fitting of contact lenses

Currently, this is the only program that is pre-approved by the JATC and L & I and is offered only at Highline College.
